In the SLRs, both 35mm and 120, I
have used a variety of Kodak and Fuji colour films. I like Kodak’s Elite
Chrome Extra Colour 100 because of the excellent vivid colours it
produces – perhaps more so than Velvia. However, it is only
available in 35mm and in some situations neutral tones can exhibit a
slight magenta cast. Fuji’s Velvia 50 is second to none despite
only having an ISO rating of 50, but in can be rated at ISO 100 and
processed accordingly: Velvia is a god reason not to give up on your
film camera! The print film I like to use is Fuji’s Pro
160C. It is available in both formats, is always reliable and scans
really well.
For the Olympus XA2 I use
exclusively print film – namely Superia 100. I find this film
displays good tonal graduations, vivid colours, works well in all
types of light and has good exposure latitude. Owing to the
metering in this camera it is not advisable to use reversal film as
it requires more accurate exposure.

In the Leica IIIB
I use only Ilford XP2 black and white film. The prewar
uncoated Elmar lens is not colour corrected and is therefore more
suited to monochrome. Ilford XP2 has many pleasing qualities:
It has a wide exposure latitude - useful when estimating the
exposure using the Sunny
16 Rule, it is good at retaining both highlight and shadow
detail and being a fast film with fine grain makes it very
versatile. It also gives very consistent scans.
